We’re excited to announce that UBC in collaboration with United in Diversity and with support from Bio Farma and D&V Medika, successfully delivered the inaugural Demystifying AI in Healthcare course in Bali Led by UBC AI and Health Network Co-Leads Drs. Raymond Ng and Anita Palepu, the four-day program helped bridge the communication gap between clinicians and data scientists while building AI literacy among healthcare professionals in Indonesia.
The course brought together 50 cross-sectoral participants including clinicians, biomedical engineers, medical educators and researchers from leading Indonesian institutions and hospitals. Our approach focused on making AI accessible, with hands-on training sessions led by Drs. Robert Bergen and Saffrin Granby from UBC’s Data Science Institute and Vancouver Coastal Health. The course also featured sessions with Dr. Eric Daniel Tenda, board committee member of the National Artificial Intelligence for Health, Ministry of Health of Indonesia, and Dr. Lohendran Baskaran, senior consultant at the National Heart Centre Singapore, who highlighted how AI is already enhancing clinical practice, for example in tuberculosis detection. The aim of this program was to establish Indonesia as a leader in healthcare AI implementation and to foster interdisciplinary partnerships essential for advancing patient care.
